October 20th, 2007 .22 RIFLE FUN SHOOT

I'm sorry that this report on our .22 rifle fun shoot is so late, but when you have a tendency to procrastinate, with a good measure of laziness thrown in, things don't get done in a timely manner. Anyway, we had an excellent turnout for our first fun shoot. We were hoping for maybe 25 entries for our first match, but we ended up with 54 entries that shot the .22 silhouette targets set up from 25 to 100 yards, and it looks like everybody had a good time. The weather did not cooperate completely with us, as it was dry and not too cold, but the wind really kicked up and played havoc with the shooters and the targets. Some of the rams at 100 yards got knocked down by the wind a couple of times, so we just set them back up and continued shooting. I don't believe we got any perfect scores of 40 out of 40, but I knew of a couple of scores that came really close.

A lot of people told me this is the first time they had a chance to zero their rifles at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards, and they were happy they could do it. We had quite a few families come out with their kids and got them shooting, which is a great thing to see. We also had a lot of friends compete against each other. I don't know if any side bets were wagered, but I heard one person who didn't shoot very well was going to buy some refreshments for his buddies after all the shooting was done.

The only criticism I heard was about the targets being painted black. Normally that is the color they are when we hold our sanctioned IHMSA silhouette matches. So we didn't think anything of it. But, at the next fun shoot we may try different colors and see what the people like best. We want everybody to enjoy themselves and want to come back again and again.

All in all everybody who I talked to said they had a lot of fun and wondered when the next one will be held. We're not sure about the date yet, but we do plan on having another fun shoot in the spring. When we decide when it will be, we'll be sure to give everybody plenty of notice. If you have any comments or questions you can get hold of me at pl8shootr@sbcglobal.net.   Thanks again for coming out, and we hope to see you in the spring.
