Our June match couldn’t
ask for a nicer day. It was sunny with a little breeze to keep everybody
from wilting in the sun. We didn’t have a large turnout unfortunately
but we did have an enthusiastic bunch. Everybody seemed to have a great
time. There wasn’t a lot of fast times and very few hostage hits.
Apparently we didn’t set the hostages close enough to the bad guys. We’ll
take care of that later in future matches.
Brad Barnaby came out on
top this month on the main event. He had two pretty decent runs with no
penalties for a total of 102.44 Great shooting Brad. Hope to see you
more often. He brought his mom & dad with him to try their hand at
it. Unfortunately his mom had a new gun that she was not sure where it
was hitting, so she ran out of ammo before she finished the course. I’ll
bet with a little practice and a couple of extra mags should fix that
problem.
Fred Elliot came in
first on the El Presidente this month with a score of 64.35. Not exactly
blazing speed, but good enough to take first place. His brother John was
hot on his heels with a 65.86 That’s only 1.51 seconds difference.
Pretty darn close folks.
We had some really high
scores on the El Presidente, which is unusual. A lot of people had a lot
of misses, which really upped the scores. I know this a speed event, and
you want to shoot fast, but if you miss the targets, speed won’t do
you a darn bit of good. Slow down just a little bit folks and watch that
front sight and you’ll be amazed on what a good score you can get.
On a different and very
unique note, Houng Tran brought a business associate from China to our
match. He had never held a gun, let alone shoot one, since firearms are
illegal to own there. In no time at all Houng had him shooting one of
his .22’s on the .22 drag race course. He was doing pretty good for a
person who had never held a gun before. Toward the end of the day I let
him try my .22 that has a red dot on it. After a couple of magazines, to
get use to the dot, he was mowing down the steel plates like a pro. You
couldn’t wipe the smile off his face even if you tried. He was having
the time of his life. We tried to get him to try the main event with a
center fire gun but he was having to much fun on the .22’s. Watching
him shoot kind of makes you realize how good we have it in our country.
Sometimes we take our rights for granted figuring that we’ll never
lose them. But if we’re not careful, we could have them erode away a
little bit at a time. We must be ever vigilant against those who think
they know what’s best for us. As the late Col. Jeff Cooper once said
"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome
by fleeing from it".

Till next time, watch that front sight and keep your finger off the
trigger until your sights are on the target.
