Plate shoot scores

West Walker Sportsman's Club holds Steel Plate shoots throughout the summer.    They are a small version of the IDPA / IPSC / ICORE disciplines.   Check the 2009 schedule for match dates.

What is a Steel Plate Shoot

Various Steel plate targets are set up, usually twelve, at a distance of 36 feet. Different obstacles and obstructions are set up for the shooter. The object is to hit each steel plate as you work your way through the various obstacles in the least amount of time. The entrant with the shortest time is the winner.

Events

We usually set up three courses of fire. One is called "El Presidente" which is a timed event, 12 rounds total (requires a mandatory magazine change), and you shoot this course three times (Iron sights or scopes). The other (timed) course is the main Steel Plate Shoot (iron sights or scope), which, depending, how we set it up (different each month), can take 12 - 14 rounds to complete (36' distance). HOWEVER, if you miss the target, you stay at that station until you do hit it. This is why most of us bring at least 3-4 magazines. This also requires a magazine change. We shoot one practice round and two rounds for time.

Additionally, depending on the amount of personnel that are working that day, we set up a (free) .22 course which is a dueling event (you shoot against a fellow shooter). Iron sights or scopes are OK here. Estimated required rounds: 100+

Types of Handguns

Your 9mm, 40 S&W, or 45 ACP are ideal for use, however, any semi-auto larger than a .22 would work.

Rules and Bullets

  • Only JHP, lead bullets, or plated bullets like those made by Rainier, for you reloaders, are allowed. This is for the safety of all shooters. The steel plates do cause ricochets, and with full metal jacketed bullets the jacket material can cut and draw blood.

  • Eye and ear protection are mandatory on the line, as well as behind the line when the line is hot. This is due to the proximity of the shooters and the aforementioned ricochets.

Time
All matches start at approximately 10am with a safety briefing and course walkthrough.

Fees
$5.00 for each discipline.
